Grassroots Diplomacy

AMLN’s international exchange programs are the foundation of our mission: annual exchanges that allows American and Middle Eastern students—or “Citizen Ambassadors” as they are called by the program—to build bridges of understanding at the citizen level and create opportunities for future interaction between them.American students travel to the Middle East and dorm with Middle Eastern university students.

Together, American and Middle Eastern students participate in dialogue sessions and media and communications workshops. They explore the rich culture and history of the host country by going on numerous excursions to historic sites. American students also have the opportunity to take Arabic language enhancement courses. Through these activities, all participants develop communication, negotiation, critical thinking, leadership, and problem-solving skills that allow them to be more effective grassroots diplomats.

My Galilee Leadership Program

The “My Galilee Leadership Program” is a unique leadership program aiming at educating its participants about the marginalized Palestinian minority in Israel.

It allows “Citizen Ambassadors”, as they are called by the program, to learn about one another and build bridges of communication and understanding. The program celebrates its ability to create opportunities for cooperation for a better and brighter future.

PAST PROGRAMS

THE PROGRAM’S GOALS ARE:

  • To establish safe, open forums for participants to engage in face-to-face discussions on cultural, political, religious, and ethical issues.
  • To empower participants with necessary skills, training, and life experiences to support and inspire them as future international leaders.
  • To encourage participants to remain engaged and continue learning about each other after the formal program has ended.

International Programs Overview

  • DIALOGUE SESSIONS

    During professionally facilitated dialogue sessions, American and Middle Eastern students discuss their personal experiences, beliefs, values and interests. They address topics such as the complexity of identity, American foreign policy, the Arab-Israeli conflict, gender relations, education, and the impact of diversity in society.Interviews with Arab media professionals, government officials, professors, artists, and activists complement these dialogue sessions, challenging students to engage with diverse perspectives.

    American students blog on themes related to the dialogue sessions in conjunction with their Middle Eastern counterparts. While this blog initially will be confined to program participants, edited portions of it may become a part of the program’s Virtual Scrapbook, a record of students’ exchanges. This blog also will provide an outlet through which participants can continue to communicate after the completion of the program.

  • TOWN HALL MEETINGS

    Participants will have the unique opportunity to meet with civic, political, professional, and religious leaders from all walks of life and to engage in discussions and dialogues concerning current events. These meetings provide insight into the life and work of prominent community figures and open channels for mutual exchange and better understanding of realities on the ground.

    LANGUAGE ENHANCEMENT

    American participants will take Arabic language classes during the duration of the program. Participants are divided into levels according to language experience and learn practical phrases and conversational tools to augment their experience.

    EXCURSIONS AND CULTURAL IMMERSION

    Participants will travel to many different places and explore the region and the culture with overnight excursions to major cities. Additionally, students have the opportunity to explore and interact with lay citizens during personal time.
